Police said the King Long bus, also referred to as Mega Bus, hit the stationary Sino truck before the driver lost control and collided with the Nile Coach bus, causing it to overturn.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the driver of a Mega Bus, traveling from Gulu to Kampala, rammed into a stationary Sino truck at the above location.

Upon impact, the driver lost control of the vehicle and subsequently knocked a Nile Coach bus, which also lost control and overturned,” Kananura added.

Three passengers aboard the Mega Bus died instantly at the scene, while 11 others were injured and rushed to Kiryandongo Hospital for treatment. Two of the injured later succumbed to their injuries, raising the death toll to five.

Authorities are still investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. Police have urged motorists to observe safety measures, particularly when vehicles break down along highways.

“Motorists are reminded to always place triangular warning signs when vehicles break down on the road to alert other road users, ensure that broken-down vehicles are removed from the roadway within the shortest possible time, and drive at controlled speeds, especially at night, while remaining vigilant for possible obstacles on the road,” Kananura advised.
